Preparing unit materials

Faculty policy is that all students receive a Unit Guide (and other materials if provided) prior to, or at commencement of semester. Off campus students should receive their materials 2-3 weeks prior to the semester commencing and on-campus students should have access to materials no later than in the first week.

  • Most urgent materials: Open University Australia (OUA) and Off-campus materials are the most urgent, so it’s a good idea to start with them first.
  • Single unit guide policy: Due to the University cross-campus policy, only one unit guide will be prepared for each unit (there is some latitude for those units included in the Rethinking Primary/EC or Secondary projects). This means, material that is specific for students on a particular campus, will need to be integrated into the one set of materials.
  • Synchronise with the Handbook: Refer to the Handbook entry for your unit to make sure the Unit materials are consistent with this entry (ie unit synopsis, unit objectives, assessment tasks). It is too late to make substantive changes for 2007 unless approved by the Curriculum Committee.
  • Unit guide publishing: Unit guides and study guides will be stapled. Hole punching is optional. Readers will be hole punched and shrink wrapped. Heat binding is too expensive.
  • Assignment returns: Make sure you apply through Off-Campus Learning Centre (OCLC) if you want assignments returned through them. Please note at Clayton, Kristin is no longer responsible for assignment returns. See the Coursework Office.
  • Units with module A and B: some students wish to study module B in the first half of semester so will need materials early in the semester.
  • Late enrolments: Make sure students know to ask for and how to access materials.

The Faculty will be offering approx 24 units each semester in 2007. To see the list of OUA units offered, click here.

Unit material guidelines

There are Faculty guidelines about the size of materials. The Associate Deans Teaching and Curriculum Committee have established these guidelines for pedagogical, as well as practical reasons. Academic Services staff will refer you to Sue Plowright if your material is outside these guidelines.
