Availability for teaching

Academic staff are expected to be available for teaching at any time Monday-Friday, except as noted below.

  • Fractional staff should negotiate with the Faculty over their period of availability. They may elect to teach whole days (that is, a person on a 0.6 contract may elect to be ‘on duty’ for three week days). Alternatively they may elect to teach over more days but prefer to avoid certain time periods (for example, early mornings). In either case, they should come to an arrangement in discussion with the Associate Dean Staff (Clayton and Peninsula) or the Associate Dean Gippsland (Gippsland).
  • Where possible, full-time staff will not be asked to teach on more than four days per week.
  • Where possible, teaching will be contained within an eight-hour day.
  • Staff may indicate a preference for not teaching on more than one campus in the same day and this preference will be accommodated where possible. Where staff teach across two campuses in a day, only one between campus journey will be required and travelling time will be allowed for in timetabling.
  • Staff may nominate a specified non-teaching day only if they have unavoidable professional commitments for the Faculty on that day, such as a regular research or consultancy commitment. In this case, the specified day must be approved in writing by the Associate Dean Staff (Clayton and Peninsula) or the Associate Dean Gippsland (Gippsland).
  • Staff may nominate a preferred non-teaching day and, where practicable, this preference will be taken into account but not guaranteed.
  • From time to time, staff may have personal or family circumstances which means that they wish to place restrictions on their times of availability for teaching. They should discuss this with the Associate Dean Staff (Clayton and Peninsula) or the Associate Dean Gippsland (Gippsland) who may approve the restrictions.
  • Staff are expected to be available for teaching throughout the teaching period and should not normally arrange conferences and other absences from campus when they have teaching commitments. Where this is unavoidable, they should take responsibility for making arrangements to cover their own teaching which are acceptable to and approved by the Associate Dean Staff (Clayton and Peninsula) or the Associate Dean Gippsland (Gippsland)
